Osteoporotic fractures are a horrible thing to watch in a patient or loved one. Luckily, it is a rare occurrence. In my practice of over thirty years and thousands of patients I have seen it only three times. It was extremely disturbing and sad to have little relief to offer to them.

The current standard of care for bone health is lacking and possibly detrimental As much as I would want these three women to have been spared their malady, I am not an advocate for pharmaceutical intervention, as the side effects are too destructive. The routine recommendation of calcium supplementation is short-sighted, and when done improperly can also cause harm. There are far better and more effective strategies for increasing bone health available.

Alternative Medicine Magazine featured an excellent article about the climate of fear surrounding osteoporosis in their April 2007 edition. You can read “The Bones of Contention” here. This subject is even further explored in the book, “The Myth of Osteoporosis,” by Gillian Sanson. Copies of the book are available in our lending library.

We often think of bones as solid, inanimate parts of our bodies. Bones are actually very much alive. Groups of cells (osteoblasts) are contantly churning out new bone, while a second group of cells (osteoclasts) are destroying it. Inside the bone, the marrow is busy creating platelets and red and white blood cells.

In Chinese medicine, bones house our Jing. (Jing is the Chinese expression for the essential fluid of our physical body, which regulates growth and development.) There is no difference between brain matter and bone marrow in traditional Chinese Medicine. Bone friendly habits do more than prevent fractures; they nurture the essence of vitality at all points in the life cycle.

Start some Bone Friendly habits today.

1. Watch your acid/alkaline balance.

The more alkaline, the better, so eat enough veggies and fruit to create a more alkaline environment and to offset the acidity of animal products and processed foods. There are several good books out on this topic. You can see a chart pH level of foods here.

2. Do weight bearing exercise several times per week.

This means lifting weights, doing hand stands or down dog, or running. A study done at Duke showed a marked increase in bone density and lung function in seniors who did simple bicep/triceps exercises with 2lb free weights. Your body works on a supply/demand system. Using muscles and tendons to put stress on bones will strengthen them.

3. Stay on your feet.

You are much less likely to break a bone if you don’t fall down! Practice exercise that promotes balance, like tai chi, yoga, and pilates. Have regular chiropractic adjustments to keep your nervous system in check.

4. Have your Vitamin D levels checked

and supplement with sublingual vitamin drops or fermented cod liver oil. Those low in Vitamin D absorb up to 60% less calcium.

5. Use a multiple mineral supplement.

When taking minerals it is always best to take a combination as they are utilized by the body more efficiently when they are together. This is the way they occur in nature. Homemade bone broth is an excellent source for the appropriate minerals.

6. Be careful with calcium supplementation.

As we age, we are often prescribed calcium by our doctors. This over supplementation of calcium can cause an imbalance and actually begin to calcify bones, making them more brittle. Magnesium is an essential mineral for the body to allow calcium to work properly. (There are a host of other health problems associated with calcium dominance.) Be sure to always supplement twice as much magnesium as calcium. Dark leafy greens are an excellent, easily absorbable source of both minerals.

7. Avoid

smoking, drinking sodas, drinking alcohol in excess. Limit caffeine to 400mg/day.

8. Prescription drugs

that promote loss of bone density need to be noted and questioned regularly. Classes of drugs contributing to bone loss are antidepressants, antacids, antifungals and antihistamines.

Osteoporosis alone is not the problem. Just like high cholesterol is really not a disease. They are both conditions that can lead to fractures and stroke respectively. These are markers and warning signs…………Think healthy, live healthy.

Bone Broth

An easy, everyday way to support your bones (and immune system and digestion and more!)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) “like supports like,” so consuming bone broth will support bones (and teeth.) Marrow is also contained in the broth, so it also nourishes the bodies ability to create blood. You’ll notice when you dispose of the finished bones they will be so soft you can dent with your fingernail. That’s because all of the minerals have left those bones and entered your broth! Your body can easily absorb and process these minerals to keep your bones healthy.

Bone broth is simple to make, and can be used in any recipe that calls for stock. It can also substitute for water when making rice, quinoa, or other grains. Substitute broth for cream in soup or mashed potatoes. Drink it straight from the cup as a yummy tea and a treat when sick!

These recipes aren’t hard and fast. Add whatever you like for added nutrients or flavor. (veggies, spices, etc ) The only requirement is the vinegar, which works to pull the minerals out of the bones.

Mineral Rich Bone Broth

2 lb beef bones (knuckle bones and feet are best, but they all work)
water
3 tbsp unfiltered cider vinegar
2 bay leaves
3 clove garlic, minced
1/2 large onion, chopped
salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place bones in a single layer on sheet, and roast in oven for 45 minutes.

Place bones in a large stock pot or crock pot. Add the rest of ingredients, filling with water to 2″ from top of container. Cook in crock pot on low for 24 hours. Simmer in stock pot, covered, for 6-8 hours. You can add more water if it cooks down too much. Cool to a temperature you can handle.

Strain broth into quart jars or other container of your choice. Broth will keep in the freezer for up to 6 months. You can repeat the above to make more broth with the same bones until they stop producing.

The “Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That” Version

2 lb beef bones
water
3 tbsp unfiltered cider vinegar

Put all ingredients in crock pot. Cook on low for 24 hours. Cool to a temp that you can handle. Strain broth into quart jars or other container of your choice. Broth will keep in the freezer for up to 6 months. You can repeat the above to make more broth with the same bones until they stop producing.

Go “Inside” to Fight Winter Blues

Let’s face it. Winter is a tough season for most people. The weather is uncooperative and cold. The sun has gone to bed before the average work day ends. Cold and flu viruses are rampant, testing immune systems at every turn. Social and familial pressures during the holiday season can get downright ridiculous. Even the bears are hibernating and the birds are flying south to avoid dealing with it all.

It’s an easy time to be stressed, irritable, mournful of loved ones who have passed, and sometimes downright miserable. Often the push of “happy, happy, happy holidays!!” can intensify the downturn. But, is this true “depression”?

Depression is defined as six months of prolonged mental despondency, accompanied by lack of energy and difficulty maintaining concentration or interest in life. Everyone has these feelings at times – our culture is quick to slap a band-aid where it doesn’t always belong. Before turning to that additional glass of wine, or anti-depressant prescription, consider if these feelings truly are depression, or if you may be instead fighting your natural reaction to the season.

In Chinese medicine, winter is the time to turn inward, focus on emotional introspection, rest, and conserve strength. All of the natural environmental cues are telling us to do this. It’s cold and dark, trees are bare of leaves, animals are hibernating – time to go inside. Not simply indoors, but INSIDE of yourself. Quiet the mind, embrace your inner world of feeling. Contesting our part in this natural equation can intensify the feelings of seasonal sadness.

“Going inside” and facing / embracing ourselves can be a terrifying prospect for some. We are literally addicted to the constant noise, chaos, and distraction of the outside world. A heavy reliance on external stimulus allows us to avoid ourselves, especially at those vital moments where introspection allows for self healing.

Easy ways to embrace introspection:

1. Nutrition. Or as I like to call it, eating great food! It’s time for those warming, comfort foods we all love. It doesn’t have to be all mac and cheese either – this is a great recipe for healing, comforting miso soup. (Which also boosts the immune system!)

2. Sleep. Carve out the time for adequate rest. You can make it happen, and you will be amazed at the improvement in your well being. Watch and pay attention to your dream language.

3. Balance the Nervous System. This is exactly what a chiropractic adjustment does for you. Acupuncture, the Migun massage bed, and yoga are other great resources.

4. Meditation / Deep Relaxation / Prayer. Start with just 3 minutes a day of complete silence and relaxation of your mind. As it becomes easier, spend a little more time each day. Those of you that currently practice – keep it up!

Mother Nature’s intelligence and wisdom is in all of us, we often simply forget to align with it. Fight the winter blues this season and heal naturally by embracing your inner self.

But after decades of resistance, a movement to bring innovative high-touch, low-cost methods of prevention and healing into our high-tech, costly system is finally gaining ground. The film follows dramatic human stories as well as visionary leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine.

December 2012

Relax and Recharge this Winter

In Chinese medicine, a main theme is our bodies moving in sync with the seasons. The dark and cold of winter encourages us to slow down, bringing the time to recharge, get plenty of rest, good nutrition, relaxation and sleep.

Winter is ruled by the water element, which is associated with the kidneys, adrenal glands, brain, and bladder. In the Chinese system, the kidneys are perceived as storing the energy of life, “qi,” in the body. Weak kidney energy may be experienced as lethargy, low energy or low vitality. The kidneys are particularly vulnerable to depletion in the winter, it is an important time to rest and nourish them- don’t overschedule or miss sleep!

A warm, comforting winter diet will support your winter system: warm soups, steamed and baked vegetables, more dairy and meats. (If your diet allows)

Due to the holidays, this is often exactly the OPPOSITE of what actually happens. Winter can be an extremely hectic time, rushing to shop for holiday gifts, planning extravagant time consuming meals, attending multiple parties and celebrations, and New Years resolutions that often involve strenuous exercise.

Although all social obligations can’t be skirted, take some time for yourself this winter by slowing down, getting adequate rest, eating warm, comforting foods, and recharging your kidneys/adrenals through supplementation. Save that resolution for the spring (starts March 21) – the perfect time for making new starts and setting goals.

Kids Spinal Checks and Adjustments only $25!

According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, chiropractic can help kids with a host of problems, including ADHD, ear infections, coordination problems, headaches, general wellness, autism, sleeping problems, food allergies, asthma, and other acute and chronic conditions children may face during childhood.

Dr. Lex has been treating during the course of her entire profession. One of her most satisfying accomplishments has been to alleviate symptoms of asthma, ear infections, and headaches in youngsters.

“One of the more disturbing things I have been noticing in children over the last 30 years is the damage from carrying heavy book bags on one shoulder. This can cause subluxation and muscle tension that distorts the spine. Many prepubescent children are diagnosed with scoliosis from the excessive mechanical stress.

It’s wonderful to see how young spines respond to non-force adjustments. When the nervous system begins to work without the distortions of misalignment, digestion, mood and sleep are enhanced, preventing a cascade of other problems.” ~Dr. Janine Lex

Whether your child is a current patient of Dr. Lex or would be new to the office, this month is the perfect time to bring them in for a complete spinal check and adjustment! Call 757.491.2598 to schedule today!

To take advantage of this December Special, be sure to print this coupon or present it on your phone at the end of your child’s appointment.

Equinox Detox Lexture

Saturday, September 15, 3:00
at our office
RSVP via telephone required. 757.491.2598

Detox Happens! It’s that season again!

It looks different to different people. Fever and runny nose, intestinal disorders, achy joints and headache are all indications of detoxification. Whether you want it to or not, this process is nature’s way of cleaning up the machinery of your body so it stays unencumbered by debris. Without detoxification our body would not survive. Don’t suppress your symptoms – Let them work for you!

Unlike the generations before us, we are exposed to more and more toxins in the air we breathe, the foods we eat, and the water we drink. We are bombarded by our environment, which is increasingly loaded with chemicals and toxic wastes that enter our bodies via our skin, lungs, and digestive tract. Not only does it make us feel yucky, at the cellular level all of our metabolic activities must work harder to eliminate this additional waste.

Detoxification can be supported with increased hydration, walking, epsom salt baths, supplementation, herbs, acupuncture and massage. Symptoms may temporarily increase during detox time, but will be followed by decreased pain, improved immune function, and increased energy.

Do a planned and conscious purification of the system during the spring and/or fall when the time is ripe for sloughing off the guck. You will be ahead of the power curve and less likely to develop degenerative conditions associated with the detoxification pathways: arthritis, high cholesterol, obesity, inflammation, allergies, depression, chronic sinusitis – just to name a few.

Call Teresa today to RSVP your spot and gain the knowledge you need to take detoxification head on! 757.491.2598

Latest post: “I listened to this [report on Kineseo-tape, which we use in the office] on NPR the other day. Scientific evidence takes a long time to accrue and the fact is that many physical medicine modalities just don’t have the funding behind them to support the level of research that drugs report.

The fact that K-tape works is simple….horses with compromised joints run faster with K-tape on the effected joints. If your shoulder is out of alignment K-tape really decreases pain and recovery time.

I am wondering if there is any ‘scientific’ research behind regular athletic tape. I truly doubt it. The stiff ancient athletic tape was not born in an age of commercial skepticism, but in a time when common sense and what worked was accepted at face value.”

Seats Still Left for Sustainable Weight Loss

Saturday, April 28, 3:00
at our office
RSVP via telephone required. 757.491.2598

This upcoming lexture will focus on helping to maintain a healthy matabolism and better sugar balance. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Make sure you’ve eaten before eight. Eating protien before 8am jump starts your metabolism and keeps blood sugar levels steady. This will stave off the munchies before lunch time. (See our SP Complete smoothie below)

2. Walk briskly for at least 15 minutes each day. As well as keeping off the weight, it helps to stabilize your blood glucose levels. This will help you be happier, have fewer hunger pangs, metabolize your food better, and feel better in general. A quick walk is easy to fit into your day – remember 15 minutes is only 1/2 a TV sitcom!

3. Take a 20 minute siesta in the afternoon. Not only is it great to get a little rest, but mid afternoon napping will help regulate your metabolism and control chemicals that affect appetite.

4. Get a chiropractic adjustment. Staying well adjusted balances the newvous system. This increases energy, in turn reducing those carb cravings.

5. Minimize exposure to EMF (electromagmentic frequencies.) Overexposure to EMF’s increases blood glucose levels. Not only does high glucose alter the metabolism negitively, it will also make you feel terrible.

Latest post: ” I want to share more about chiropractic and why I am so committed to providing chiropractic care. There really isn’t much in the media about chiropractic and its far reaching advantages. Most people when thinking of chiropractic think of low back pain. Indeed that is often what chiropractors treat, but the nervous system is really the underlying tissue the chiropractor is responsible for balancing and harmonizing. We do that through stimulating the nervous system at the spinal level.

My first experience with chiropractic was at the tender age of 17 when my mother took me to see my stepfather’s chiropractor at his recommendation. I had had headaches for years, headaches that had limited my ability to sit and concentrate in school. I found that if I walked the headaches would wane. So most of my high school years I was an avid hiker and though I was an excellent student I ate a lot of aspirin to get through a regular day. Subsequently my stomach and intestines became a problem.

To make a longer story short within one week of my first visit to the chiropractor my headaches abated for the first time in 5 years. My mother and I were amazed. I later became totally sold on chiropractic when my mother’s long standing neuropathy was resolve with simple adjustments to the spine. More details later.”

Changing Patterns

The new year is a common time for people to decide to change behavior and make improvements in their lives. You’ll see the same resolutions in the top 10 lists every year, many of them involving health and weight. Why? Because we try to make the changes only mentally, without making them new lifestyle habits!

In every moment of our experience, we make choices. We are now a product of those choices. But we aren’t powerless to this phenomena, just as those old choices were made, we can change by choosing to develop different thoughts and behaviors. Once the pattern is altered, change begins.

The scientific concept of cellular intelligence illustrates this idea. Each of our cells has it’s own intelligence, which accumulate as intelligence in our organs and throughout our bodies, developing a pattern of behavior. Each part (cell and organ) is affected by our thoughts and feelings. Playing a piano or riding a bike becomes “second nature,” never entirely forgotten because the cellular habits are passed on. The whole being “knows” how to accomplish the task.

Each cell renews itself within hours to 14 months, depending on the type of cell. It is for this reason that in order to make lasting change, whether that change is metabolic or habitual, we must do intensive restructuring of our being for at least a year, preferably two years. As we develop new patters of thought and behavior, eventually our entire being is renewed to become a completely new person. Changing physiology – fat cells to muscle cells – takes time.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? The good news is, YOU CAN DO IT and STICK with it!

Southern Comfort – Spiced Rubbed Pot Roast and Cheesy Quinoa

Pot Roast

5 teaspoons Himalayan salt

2 teaspoons paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 (4-pound) boneless chuck roast, trimmed of excess fat
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium white onion, coarsely chopped
1 medium celery stalk, coarsely chopped
4 medium garlic cloves, coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 cups bone broth
4 fresh thyme sprigs

  • Heat the oven to 300°F and arrange a rack in the lower third.
  • In a small bowl, combine the salt, paprika, pepper, and cayenne. Evenly rub the spice mix on all sides of the roast; set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a Dutch oven or a large, heavy-bottomed pot with a tightfitting lid over medium heat until smoking, about 5 minutes. Add the meat and brown it on all sides, about 20 minutes total; remove to a plate.
  • Add the onion, celery, and garlic to the pot, season with salt, and cook until just softened, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste and stir to coat the vegetables. Pour the broth into the pot and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Add the thyme, reserved meat, and any accumulated juices to the pot and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook in the oven until the roast is fork tender, about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Quinoa

1 tbsp butter
1 small yellow onion, diced small
3-4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups bone broth
1 cup uncooked quinoa
1/4 tsp salt, or to taste
1/4 cup Parmesan or feta cheese

  • In a medium sized pan, sautee the onion and garlic in butter or olive oil over medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes, until onions are just soft. Reduce heat to medium low.
  • Add the vegetable broth and quinoa. Cover, and allow to simmer until liquid is mostly absorbed and quinoa is cooked, about fifteen minutes.
  • Remove from heat, and gently mix quinoa to distribute any excess moisture. Season with salt to taste, and top with Parmesan cheese, or, for a vegan version, mix in nutritional yeast instead of the cheese.

Cultivating Happiness

Happiness means different things to different people. It can revolve around what you have, but more commonly is deeply rooted in your emotional appreciation of life and a balance between the inner and outer you.

It is difficult to be happy when you are hurting or lonely, but the very foundation of oriental medicine tells us that starting with balancing your internal energetic body and all else will follow. Cultivating happiness can be a spiritual path and a life’s work. Modern western medicine teaches that emotional stress can be at the root of over 90% of physical ailments. So both sides of the globe, east and west, support the importance of emotional balance and harmony within as a foundation for health. The Oriental systems have very strategic and specific ways of nurturing happiness in each individual. Chi, the energy of happiness, is the vital animating energy that flows through all of creation, including us.

Without the foundation of strong Chi within our bodies, happiness can be difficult to achieve. The Chinese say to work on the foundation first by: eating well, being still and quiet regularly to allow our emotions to harmonize, and being careful where we spend our Chi. So many of us unconsciously abuse our vital bank account on life force through emotional and physical abuse, wasting valuable life force through worry, over work, and over indulgence.

Although Chi is invisible to the human eye, it can be felt by everyone. We all recognize the feeling when our energy is high or low, or blocked. And we can see it on the face of others.

A true measure of how happy you really are is the amount of pleasure you can receive from the simple things in life…….a sunset, the aroma of a flower, a good nights rest!

Enjoy life and take care of yourself. Cultivate the good life affirming thoughts and give your body a chance to renew and restore.

Boost Your Chi!

The winter season correlates with the water element. It is the time to be aware of our sense of will and determination—our backbone!

The negative emotion for this time of year is fear or anxiety; the kind of fear that wakes us in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. Remedies for these negative emotional states include practicing patience, waiting quietly, but my favorite is acupuncture. Acupuncture gets into the matrix of your psyche and fortifies what is weak and harmonizes the discordant.

To back the acupuncture up herbal blends will help to energically support the ongoing fortification and harmonization as we carry on in the world. Almost magically things begin to be less stressful, more fulfilling.

Tartaletas Extravaganzas & Strawberry Mint Tartlet

It’s Christmas cookie time! Here’s a little spin (2 variations) on the traditional cookie – they are great to take to parties!

Tartaletas Extravaganzas

For the crust:

  • 1 cup walnuts
  • ½ cup almonds
  • ½ cup ground flax seeds
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 tbsp raw agave nectar
  • 1 tsp orange zest

In a food processor grind the walnuts slightly. Add the rest of the ingredients and continue to blend until it is all well mixed (do not blend until it gets oily). With your hands or using cupcake molds shape little cups out of the dough. Dehydrate them for 3 hours at 115F or just refrigerate for 30 minutes (in this case the cups will be softer).

For the strawberry filling:

  • 8 strawberries
  • 2 tbsp raw agave nectar
  • ½ cup melted raw cacao butter
  • Chop the strawberries and mix them with agave nectar and melted cacao butter.

For the garnish:

  • ½ mango
  • 2-4 strawberries
  • 16 blueberries
  • Fresh mint leaves

ASSEMBLY:
Fill each walnut-raisin cup with strawberry filling mixture. Decorate each tart with a scoop of fresh mango, a slice of strawberry, 2 blueberries and a fresh mint leaf. Put into freezer for a couple minutes and serve. If you are not planning to serve it right away just keep it refrigerated.  Makes 8 servings

Strawberry Mint Tartlet

For the crust:

  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 3 dates, pitted
  • 1 tbsp raw agave nectar
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • A pinch of Kalahari salt

In a food processor grind the walnuts slightly. Add the rest of the ingredients and continue to blend until it is all well mixed (do not blend until it gets oily). With your hands or using cupcake molds shape little cups out of the dough. Dehydrate them for 3 hours at 115F or just refrigerate for 30 minutes (in this case the cups will be softer).

For the topping:

  • 4 large strawberries
  • 1/4 cut crushed walnuts
  • Fresh mint leaves

Halve strawberries, crush walnuts and pull off small sprigs of mint. Place to the side for assembly.

For the mint-chocolate garnish:

  • 1 cup raw cacao butter
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp raw agave nectar
  • 1 tsp mint extract
  • A pinch of Kalahari salt
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper

Melt cup of cacao butter and mix with 2 spoons of cacao, a pinch of sea salt, a pinch of cayenne peppers, 1 spoon agave nectar and teaspoon mint extract. Stir until mixed thoroughly.

ASSEMBLY:
Fill each tart cup with half a strawberry and squeeze on the mint-chocolate garnish. Sprinkle on some walnuts and add a spring of fresh mint to complete. If possible, add the mint chocolate after placing the tart in the freezer for 10 minutes so the chocolate, still warm, will condense on top of the strawberries. Makes 8 servings
